KING OF SALADS FEARED DEAD

A rescue operation has been called off following a plane crash into the English Channel. The single-engine plane is reported to have hit water twenty miles off the island of Jersey. A search operation involving helicopters was launched. Some wreckage is believed to have been found, but no bodies have yet been recovered.

It is believed that the Cessna 182 registered in the UK is owned by Jeffrey Larkin, known in the world of horticulture as the King of Salads. The plane took off from his private airstrip in West Sussex on Friday at 6 p.m. It is believed that his wife, Adina, a former Czech model, was travelling with him. Neighbours say that the family own a house in Jersey and regularly visit for the weekend. They are survived by their seventeen-year-old daughter, Tiffany Larkin, who is being comforted by friends.

A States of Jersey Police spokeswoman said: ‘Following a comprehensive search and rescue mission by the RNLI, fire and rescue service, Channel Island Air Search and assisted by private boats, we now believe there were no survivors of yesterday’s light aircraft crash.

‘The States of Jersey Police will now be working alongside the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) to establish what happened.’ No time has been given as to when the aircraft lost radio contact.

Colleagues at King Salads, one of the UK’s leading producers of lettuces and salad crops, expressed their dismay and condolences for the loss of their majority shareholder. Timothy Tranter, Director of Human Resources, issued a statement on behalf of the 120 staff. ‘We are all unified in our grief for the Larkin family.’
